French actress Yvonne Furneaux, 98, died on July 5. Furneaux worked with such directors as Fellini (Marcello Mastroianni’s weeping, suicidal fiancée in La Dolce Vita) Polanski (Catherine Deneuve’s sister in Repulsion), and Antonioni (Le Amichi); she was a Royal Academy of Dramatic Art graduate and was a rising young theater actress when spotted for films. Between 1952 and 1984—in addition to the films above-named—Furneaux appeared in such varied fare as The Beggar’s Opera (as Jenny Diver), The Master of Ballantrae, Lisbon, The Mummy, The Count of Monte Cristo, Night Train to Milan, and her swan song, Frankenstein’s Aunt Tillie. She eased up on acting after marrying cinematographer Jacques Natteau in 1962.
