British actress Ysanne Churchman, 99, died on July 4, the BBC has just announced. Churchman costarred as Grace Archer in the radio soap The Archers from 1952-55, at which point her character was killed in a barn fire, to the vocal dismay of fans. Her firing, she later said, was “victimisation because I’d been to Equity to get my fees put right. But don’t feel sorry for me. They say that when one door shuts another opens. And on the very night Grace died, ITV started, and immediately needed people with just exactly my experience to voice the commercials. And so I was able to make a good living from voiceovers for years.” The daughter of actor Andrew Churchman and actress Gladys Dale, Churchman also appeared in such TV and film projects as The Railway Children, Crossroads, Dr. Who, Madame Bovary, Alice in Wonderland, and Oliver Twist.
