Dutch actress, singer and writer Wieteke Van Dort, 81, died on July 15. Born in Surabaya, Dutch East Indies, she was best known for her popular TV character Tante Lien (The Late Late Tien Show, 1979-88). She and her family moved to the Netherlands when she was 13. While she was in dramatic school, she began working as a comedienne; through the 1970s, Van Dort worked her way up in television. In 2007 she received Silver Medal of Merit from the Minister of Defence for her work with veterans: “Through her efforts,” her commendation stated, “she highlights our solidarity and strengthens the bond between Dutch society and the ex-soldiers making a substantial contribution to the welfare of veterans. In her performances she also bridges the gap between the older and younger veterans.” Besides her popular Tante Lien character, Van Dort appeared in numerous films and TV shows, most recently this year’s Verliefd op Bali.
