It’s Musician Day at Eve’s Obits! The fourth today is guitarist Vic Flick, who died on Nov. 14, age 87. Flick is best known for his work on the James Bond theme, used in Dr. No, Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, and others. He was also a session guitarist for such artists as Peter and Gordon, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Herman’s Hermits, Cliff Richard, Eric Clapton, Dusty Springfield and Engelbert Humperdinck. Flick composed themes and backgrounds and did arrangements for 50-some films and TV movies. Of his James Bond sting, he said, “It had an edge to it, sort of a dynamic sound. I overplayed it — leaned into those thick low strings with the very hard plectrum [a guitar pick, for you non-hep cats out there], played it slightly ahead of the beat, and it came out exciting, almost ‘attacking,’ which fit the James Bond image.”
