Japanese film and TV star Toshiyuki Nishida, 76, was found dead in his Tokyo home on Oct. 17. From 1974 through this year, he appeared in about 150 films and TV shows, most notably recurring roles in Saiyûki (a Chinese folk tale), the historical dramas Hachidai Shôgun Yôshimune, Yae no Sakura, Kômyô ga Tsuji, and Aoi Tokugawa Sandai, the “fishing maniac” comedy Tsuribaka Nisshi, the medical dramas Shiroi Kyotô and Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michikothe, and the romantic drama Kazoku no Katachi. Nishida won two "Japanese Academy Awards" (the Nippon Akademii-Shou) for best actor, for Tonkô and Tsuribaka Nisshi 6; he also served as president of the Japan Actors Union. Just this year, he appeared in the series Sayonara Maestro, and the film version of his series Dr. X was in production.
