Singer, guitarist, and songwriter Toriano Adaryll “Tito” Jackson, 70, died of a heart attack on Sept. 15 while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma. In many ways Tito was more successful than his brother Michael: Tito had a relatively stable personal life, avoided brushes with the law, and was still performing steadily at the time of his death. Tito performed with The Jackson 5 (later The Jacksons) from 1964 till they disbanded in 1985. He later performed in clubs as a blues musician, judged a British TV talent show, had successful records with “Get It Baby,” “One Way Street,” “Love One Another,” and “Attitude,” and managed his sons Taryll, TJ and Taj Jackson’s group 3J. Tito said in 2021, “It was the blues that got me interested in the guitar. Back in the early days, when we used to play the High Chaparral and Pepper’s Lounge, we had blues in our act. Usually three or four blues songs every night. We were right in the middle of that sweet R&B music, blues and that whole thing! We did that for many years. Then we started doin’ the Jackson 5 thing and Motown, and that’s a whole different thing altogether.”
