British actor Timothy West, 90, died on Nov. 12. The son of actor Lockwood West, he began his career onstage, and developed quite a reputation as a classical actor. He soon became a mainstay of British TV, with continuing roles on EastEnders, Edward the King (in the title role), The Last Bastion and Brass (both as Churchill), The Big Knights, Bedtime, Bleak House, Coronation Street, and Gentleman Jack. He was also seen on the big screen in Nicholas and Alexandra, The Day of the Jackal, Joseph Andrews, Agatha, and 102 Dalmatians. “Asking me what my favourite roles have been is a bit like asking me if I prefer the Beethoven quartets or strawberry jam,” West said. “Some parts are just tremendous fun because the audience lap it up and you feel good, and you get it right, and a lot of personal satisfaction accrues from that. But some plays you enjoy because you like the people in them, or you’ve had fun, or been to nice places.” West was married to actresses Jacqueline Boyer and Prunella Scales (who survives); his sons Samuel and Joseph West are also actors.
