TV star Shannen Doherty, 53, died of cancer on July 13. Pretty in an offbeat way (one eye was noticeably lower than the other), Doherty was a busy child and teen actress (she was one of the Heathers in Heathers); her star-making role was as bad girl Brenda in Beverly Hills 90210 (1990-94). Doherty gained the reputation of being somewhat of a bad girl herself, posing for Playboy, fighting with coworkers, showing up late on-set. Post-90210, she showed up in such vehicles as Charmed, Mallrats, Satan’s School for Girls, Hell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay, Kiss Me Deadly, Christmas Caper, Bukowski, and Riverdale. She was married three times, including to actor Ashley Hamilton and poker player Rick Salomon. On her leaving 90210, Doherty said that “Aaron [Spelling] got as fed up with me as I was with the show, and I think it was because the notoriety was too much. People were hating the character and I couldn’t take the abuse that came with that. People couldn’t separate me from her and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful.”
