German actress Renate Hoy, 93, died on July 1. In 1952, she was crowned Miss Nürnberg, and later Miss Germany. This led to a contract with Universal, and from 1953-59 she was seen in such varied fare as Abbott and Costello Go to Mars, The Golden Blade, Border River, The Birds and the Bees, A Certain Smile, Missile to the Moon, and The Man Who Understood Women. She also appeared in the 1954 German film Schloß Hubertus. Hoy owned a salon and was successful in real estate. She was married twice, including a 1954-59 marriage to actor Brett Halsey. Two of her three children became musicians: Charles Oliver Hand, Jr., fronted the punk band Rock Bottom and the Spys (he was killed in prison in 2005); and Richard James Simpson was in the bands Invisiblechains and Teardrain.
