British makeup artist Paul Engelen, 75, died on Nov. 3. Engelen started his career assisting on such films as Oliver! and Anne of the Thousand Days, and eventually he worked on numerous Bond films (The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, Die Another Day, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace), with Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria, Trail of the Pink Panther, Curse of the Pink Panther); he also created Nicole Kidman’s comedy nose for The Hours, and makeup for Reds, Batman, The Phantom Menace, Gladiator, and TV’s Game of Thrones. Engelen noted that “it’s impossible to have any other life when you are at work at 3 a.m. every morning preparing the actors for hours in the makeup chair. It is very demanding, and you have people in the chair for hours at a time. And you have to get it on properly and — people forget — you have to get it off properly, too.”
