Actor Nicky Katt, 54, hanged himself in his L.A. apartment on April 8. Katt worked frequently for such directors as Richard Linklater, Steven Soderbergh, Christopher Nolan, Robert Rodriguez and David Gordon Green; his best remembered roles were as a bully in Dazed and Confused, and as high-school teacher Harry Senate in Boston Public. Katt appeared in such shows and movies (frequently playing tough guys) as CHiPs, Voyagers!, Sister Act, American Yazuka, Strange Days, Friends, Boiler Room, SubUrbia, Batman & Robin, One True Thing, The Limey, Rules of Engagement, Insomnia, School of Rock, and The Dark Knight. Steven Soderbergh said of Katt, “He’s absolutely fearless. No idea is too outrageous. He’ll try anything.” Katt told the L.A. Times that “There’s so much desperation in the air, in Los Angeles especially. You don’t notice it in New York as much. Everybody plays it a little cooler there and people have a lot more interaction with each other. I think Stanley Kubrick called the vibe in L.A. a ‘low-level malevolence.’ It eats away at you at some point.”
