Restaurateur and TV chef Naomi Pomeroy, 49, drowned on July 13 after a tubing accident on an Oregon river. Pomeroy owned Beast, a Portland restaurant for which she earned a James Beard award. She was a contestant on the third season of Top Chef Masters; though she did not win that season, Pomeroy returned to the show several times as a guest judge. A self-taught chef, Pomeroy also appeared on the shows Knife Fight and Iron Chef, and wrote the book Taste & Technique: Recipes to Elevate Your Home Cooking. Of her beginnings as a chef, Pomeroy said to Starchefs magazine, “My father’s mom is from the South, and cooking in the South is a whole different thing. It’s a hospitality thing. My mom was an Army brat and lived in France for some of her childhood; her mother was a terrible cook, but she was inspired when she came to Oregon to voraciously read cookbooks and had memories of living in France and food they ate there. I spent a lot of my childhood eating simple and really thoughtful meals, like a soufflé and a salad.”
