Belize-born British actress and singer Nadja Cattouse (her real name—isn’t it fabulous?) died on Oct. 29. She was 99. Her acting career—from the 1950s-80s—was exclusively on the small screen; her TV vehicles included Armchair Theatre, Dixon of Dock Green, Crown Court, Within These Walls, and Johnny Jarvis. During WWII, Catthouse worked as a signals operator, and was a physical training instructor for the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She was also an acclaimed singer, specializing in folk music. Catthouse called singing “the peak of my career, really. I was very, very much involved in tracing songs. For instance, you may find a song that comes from Guyana and it is really a song that maybe an English buccaneer took to the Caribbean. The oldest folk song in Belize where I come from is in fact an English and an Irish tune. And so there are all these connections.”
