French actor, writer, and theatrical producer Michel Blanc, 72, died of a stroke on October 4. Blanc played mostly “French Woody Allen-type” roles, though he successfully did some dramatic turns as well. He co-founded Le Splendid, a Parisian theater company which turned out many film directors. Although active in the theater, Blanc is best known for his movie roles (only one of which, Pret-a-Porter, was widely seen in the US). He also wrote and directed a number of films; at the time of his death, he had one film (La Cache) in production. When called a “sad clown,” Blanc quite rightly rebelled: “I’m not a sad clown at all, I’m a worried clown. And who isn’t worried? What is the human condition? It is not knowing why we are here, and not knowing how we will die.”
