Venezuelan actress Marisela Berti, 74, died on Oct. 30, from the after-effects of a stroke she suffered two years ago. Berti was the Queen of the Telenovelas, appearing in about a dozen. She started her career as a beauty princess (never quite making it to queen—she placed 4th in the 1971 Miss Venezuela pageant). Besides her many TV series (the most recent of which was the Mexican-made El Señor de los Cielos), Berti appeared in such films as Bárbara, Cuchillos de Fuego, and Las Profecías de Amanda. She was married to singer Chucho Avellanet, and later had a long relationship with director Mauricio Walerstein; their son, Alejandro Walerstein, is an actor. She named her favorite role as Candela Benítez in Señora. “People still remember her after 27 years, as well as her most famous phrase: ‘What a moment!’ I owe my friend [writer] José Ignacio Cabrujas the opportunity to play the role of my life.”
