Filipina movie producer Lily Yu Monteverde, 85, died on August 4, less than a week after her husband’s death. Between 1976 and this year, she produced more than 600 films and TV shows, working with most of the more famous Filipino stars, and helming an impressive number of blockbusters. She founded the still-bustling Regal Entertainment in 1976 (which began as a distribution company, run out of a theater’s popcorn stand). Among her more popular films were the Mano Po (“your hand, please”) series, consisting of seven films produced from 2002-16; these all reflected Monteverde’s own Chinese/Filipina heritage. She also produced many TV variety series and dramatic TV-movies, and invested money in several hotels. Among her survivors is her son Richard Goldwin Yu Monteverde, a basketball player and coach.
