British singer Liam Payne, 31, who performed with One Direction, jumped or fell to his death from the third floor of a Buenos Aires hotel on Oct. 16. Payne became a star with the boy band in 2010. The wildly successful One Direction (formed during the competition show The X Factor) disbanded in 2016, and Payne then had a solo hit in 2017 with “Strip That Down.” Payne also became a music producer through the company Hampton Music Limited—he continued to perform and record continuously till his death (he also had a fashion line through Hugo Boss). Payne, who suffered from abuse of both alcohol and tattoos, said that One Direction had the same problems that most groups have: “At the start we couldn’t get past our own egos. There would be fights over who got to sing what part, and even personal style. Everybody had their own little thing – it was like having four older brothers.”
