British actor Kenneth Cope, 93, died on Sept. 11. Cope had continuing roles in the series Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), That Was the Week That Was, Coronation Street, Brookside, and The Damned, and appeared in two Carry On comedies (Matron, at Your Convenience). Cope’s other films included X the Unknown, Dunkirk, The Concrete Jungle, Change Partners, and Juggernaut, as well as countless one-off TV roles. He and his wife, actress Renny Lister (who survives), ran several restaurants; their children, Mark, Nicholas, and Martha, are all performers. Of his Carry Ons, Cope said, “It was fantastic. It really was seen as a leg up at the time if you were asked to do a Carry On. They were seaside postcard humour and are easy laughs. The people in them came from variety and were incredibly talented. They knew not to hog the limelight or overstep the mark. Unfortunately, in the later ones, a few of the newer, younger members that they drafted in did.”
