Singer and songwriter JD Souther, 78, died at his home in New Mexico on Sept. 17. Souther wrote some of The Eagles’ biggest hits, including “Best of My Love,” “Victim of Love,” “Heartache Tonight,” and “New Kid in Town.” He also wrote for (and sometimes duetted with) Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, and had a solo career as a singer, as well. Moving to L.A. in the ’60s, he collaborated with Glenn Frey, thereby becoming part of the L.A. rock scene and meeting many of the stars he would work with. Souther was also an actor, appearing in such TV shows and movies as Thirtysomething, Nashville, Purgatory, Postcards from the Edge, My Girl 2, and Deadline. “I like writing in a group,” said Souther. “When you’re writing with good writers you’re so critical of each other that you don’t let anything pass that doesn’t feel like it’s A+. Linda Ronstadt had the best ear for songs I’ve ever heard. She just was absolutely dead-on when she picked a song.”
