Scottish comedienne, actress and writer Janey Godley, 63, died of ovarian cancer on Nov. 2. She was well-known for (and received threats for) her political activism (Scottish independence, pro-trans rights), and famously wielded an obscene anti-Trump sign outside his Turnberry Golf resort. Beginning her stand-up career in 1994, Godley was a hit at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, wrote her memoirs (Handstands in the Dark) and appeared on such TV shows as River City, Sam Delaney’s News Thing, The Alex Salmond Show, Have I Got News for You, and Traces, and the film Wild Rose. “When I go on stage there is a sense of fear,” Godley said. “I go on stage and I make up the show right there and then, ’cause I like that element of fear, that it might just go wrong at any moment.” Her daughter, Ashley Storrie, is also a stand-up comic.
