Imposing, booming-voiced actor James Earl Jones, 93, died at his New York home on Sept. 9. Jones appeared in numerous Broadway shows, notably The Great White Hope, The Whites, Master Harold . . . and the boys, Driving Miss Daisy, and, most recently, The Gin Game. His distinctive voice could be heard introducing CNN, and on many commercials (he also spoofed himself on several sitcoms). From 1966 through 2022, Jones appeared in countless films and TV shows, including Claudine, The River Niger, Conan the Barbarian, Field of Dreams, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, The Sandlot, and The Lion King; he was also the menacing voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars films. Jones recalled the advice his father gave him about becoming an actor: “If you want to do this business, you gotta do it because you love it, not because it’s gonna make you rich or famous. That was the best advice he could give me.”
