Scottish DJ Jack Revill, who worked under the name Jackmaster, died in Ibiza on Oct. 12 after suffering a head injury. He began DJ’ing at clubs and bars in Glasgow as a teen, and eventually went on to co-found several record labels. Jackmaster “curated” such artists as Moodymann, Joy Orbison, Tale of Us, Dance Mania, and DJ Slimzee (none of whom have I heard omigawd I am so old). He worked at clubs and festivals all over the UK and won numerous DJ’ing awards (as well as one for Contributions to Scottish Culture). His only minor scandal was in 2018, when he took GHB (fun fact: its street names include Georgia Home Boy, Goop, and Grievous Bodily Harm) and attempted to “kiss and grab people against their will” at the Love Saves the Day Festival in Bristol, which makes him pretty much every person at every music festival. Even club DJ’ing is passé now, as Jackmaster recently noted: “It was about feeling hyped and inspired in the club. Sadly, those moments are rare now. Blame the phones and people who don’t dance, I think.”
