Australian meme star Jack Karlson of Chinese restaurant arrest fame died on Aug. 7. He was 82. Karlson became world-kinda-famous in 2009 when a 1991 video of him being arrested went viral (remember Sweet Brown, “Charlie bit my finger,” and “leave Britney alone?”). Karlson was halfway through a “succulent Chinese meal” in Brisbane when he was falsely arrested for using a stolen credit card and hauled out. He declaimed dramatically and colorfully, with Barrymore-esque brio, for the news cameras: “I’m under what? Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest! What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal? See that chap over…. get your hand off my penis! This is the bloke who got me on the penis, people,” finishing off with a cheery “Ta-ta! And farewell!” Karlson was a painter (canvases, not houses) in private life. He is the subject of a documentary, The Man Who Ate a Succulent Chinese Meal, currently in production.
