Crooner Jack Jones, 86, died on Oct. 23. The son of actor and singer Allan Jones and actress Irene Hervey, Jack was signed by Capitol Record in 1959, and became a kind of second-string Dean Martin or Tony Bennett. With his good looks and smooth vocal style, Jones had a steady career fighting his way upstream through the rock era. He recorded some 20 albums, and popped up in TV series and variety shows through the 2010s, along with the occasional movie and game show. He was married six times, including to actress Jill St. John. Jones told interviewer Alex Zaglin that “My father was not happy with the whole Sinatra thing. He was an operatic singer and didn’t like people who crooned. I took from him what he offered: the best education singing-wise that I could get. He sent me to wonderful teachers that taught me how to sing in a legit way and use my voice properly.”
