Dutch musician Gerry Arling, of the Mid-Century Modern musical duo Arling & Cameron, died on Feb. 21. I had never heard of Arling & Cameron till today, but now they are one of my favorite groups, with the same kind of musicianship and silliness provided by They Might Be Giants. Arling (and his brother Harry) played in jazz clubs through the 1980s, and with such “illustrious” bands—according to a Dutch obit—as AA & The Doctors, Bastards of The Universe, and Human Electrics. Arling & (Richard) Cameron teamed up in the late ’90s, and released six albums between 1999-2015 (the albums’ titles, such as Hi-Fi Underground, Sound Shopping, and Music For Imaginary Films, are perfect for their brand of music). I highly recommend you rush to YouTube and listen to “w.e.e.k.e.n.d.,” “Jealousie,” and the adorable “We Love Dancing.”
