British stage, screen and TV actor Geoffrey Hinsliff, 87, has died, his family announced on Sept. 15. He was best known for playing troublemaker Don Brennan on Coronation Street (from 1987-97, till he was killed off in a car wreck while trying to run over another character). The Yorkshire-born RADA graduate had an impressive stage career, also appearing on TV and in films (O Lucky Man!, Crown Court, Z Cars, I Claudius, Dr. Who, A Bridge Too Far, Jackanory). His family (including daughter Gaby Hinsliff, a well-known journalist) wrote, “Geoff was a working-class boy from a family of five who left school in Leeds aged 15 with no qualifications . . . It was an English teacher who encouraged him to act and all his life he fervently believed in the power of education. He was restless, curious, adventurous and funny; he loved nothing better than setting the world to rights around the dinner table.”
