Chicago house DJ Charles Chambers, who performed as DJ Funk, died of cancer on March 5. He was 54. Funk got his start spinning music at parties around Chicago and Detroit, and soon began blending, as music writer Hattie Lindert says, “Blending roiling strains of Miami bass, house, hip-hop and footwork into a brand new sound. Funk is credited with not just innovating the ghetto house subgenre, but coining the term itself.” He put out several Ghetto House and Booty House mix records, and launched his own label, Funk Records. Funk said in 2015 that “I just decided that I just needed to be more real and more like myself. I decided, if I go one route, I’m-a sound like everybody else. If I take it this route and make something like ‘Pussy Ride,’ that’s something that’ll shock a motherfucker." Indeed, this motherfucker was shocked.
