Actor Denis Arndt, 86, died on March 25. A decorated helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, he auditioned for a local play in Seattle as a lark, and never looked back. From 1974-2023, he appeared in countless movies and TV shows (most famously ogling Sharon Stone’s lady garden during the interrogation scene in Basic Instinct). Arndt had small or supporting roles in such movies and TV shows as The Wonder Years, Annie McGuire (as Mary Tyler Moore’s husband in her flop sitcom), L.A. Law, How to Make an American Quilt, Ally McBeal, Providence, JAG, Boston Legal, and Grey's Anatomy. Arndt also did theater; he was Tony-nominated for Heisenberg, and appeared in much local theater. “One thing I couldn’t ever get tired of is being part of a good story,” he told writer Noah Golden (no relation—that I know of). “We're the only ones that get together, turn off the lights and participate in this falsehood in which comes some truth about human existence. When you're in a room and a story is being told, you know that everybody in that room’s cerebral cortex is focused on exactly on the story as though it was happening to them.”
