Game-show host Chuck Woolery, 83, died at his Texas home on Nov. 23. He started his career as a pop and folk singer; he was tall, handsome and affable, and acted in Love American Style, The Treasure of Jamaica Reef, A Guide for the Married Woman, and The Prize. Woolery’s first game-show stint was on It’s Your Bet, in 1972; he went on to host numerous others, most notably Wheel of Fortune (1975-81), Scrabble (1984-90), Love Connection (1983-94), and Lingo (2002-07). He also had his own talk show, in 1991. Woolery was a pro-gun, anti-Semitic, and Covid conspiracy theorist (that last until his son caught Covid). He was married four times (including to actress Jo Ann Pflug). “What people liked about me on television,” Woolery told The Hill, “is that I was natural and myself … I’ve learned to be at ease, whether I’m doing an interview, on radio or television, and it’s easier for me to come across as myself, and people believe me because it’s from the heart.”
