Chinese actress Cheng Pei-pei, 78, died in San Francisco on July 17. Born in Shanghai, she began working in films in the early ’60s, her most notable early role being in the martial-arts drama Come Drink with Me (1966). Cheng became an expert swordswoman starring in that and many similar films, including a 1968 sequel, Golden Swallow. She moved to California in the early ’70s to raise a family, and in 2000 had a career revival playing the villainess Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Cheng continued working steadily until 2020, when she developed the degenerative brain disease that killed her. She is survived by her children: Eugenia Yuan (an actress and Olympic gymnast), Harry Yuan (an actor and writer), and Jennifer Yuan and Marsha Yuen (actresses).
