Cuban/Louisianan singer Angela Álvarez, 97, died on Dec. 6. Born in Cuba, Álvarez emigrated to the US in 1965, settling with her family in Baton Rouge. She spent her life writing and performing songs for her friends and family but in 2022 her grandson produced an album of her singing (accompanying herself on guitar) her own songs. She won a Grammy for it, becoming the oldest Latin Grammy “Best New Artist" winner (she shared the award with Silvana Estrada). Andy Garcia produced and narrated a documentary about her, Miss Angela; she also made a singing cameo in his film Father of the Bride. The Grammy, Álvarez said, “was a very big but very beautiful surprise, and I thought afterwards that all my dreams came true,” adding that “at 95, that doesn't matter."
