Busy TV actress Alice Hirson, 95, died on Feb. 14. Soap fans know her from her recurring roles on One Life to Live, Another World, and Dallas; and sitcom fans know her as Ellen Degeneres’s baffled, well-meaning mother on Ellen. The native New Yorker got her start onstage, and soon began getting roles on 1950s-60s anthology series, shot in New York. From the 1950s into the 2020s, she was seen in such TV shows as Maude, The Waltons, The Ropers, Taxi, St. Elsewhere, Matlock, Will & Grace, and Murphy Brown. Hirson also had small roles in big films: The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight, Nightwing, Being There, Private Benjamin, Revenge of the Nerds, Mass Appeal, and Blind Date. She was married to screenwriter Roger O. Hirson and actor Stephen Elliott.
