Alan Rachins, one of the many stars of L.A. Law, died of a heart attack on Nov. 2. He was 82. He started his career onstage, appearing on Broadway in After the Rain, Hadrian the Seventh, and Oh! Calcutta! After making a hit in the film Always, he appeared in numerous TV series and movies, and from 1986-94 he played snooty Douglas Brackman on L.A. Law. He later played Jenna Elfman’s father on the pallid sitcom Dharma & Greg. Rachins also wrote scripts for The Fall Guy, Hill Street Blues, Knight Rider, Quincy, and Hart to Hart. He continued acting regularly—mostly on TV—till last year. He is survived by his wife (since 1978), actress Joanna Frank. “I love the idea of playing different characters and I wouldn’t want to be stuck doing the same thing all of the time,” Rachins told New Jersey Stage. “But who knows? You just do the next thing that comes along and do the best with it you can and see what happens. It’s a crapshoot and you can’t really exert control.”
